Music notes and clef heart behind the ear
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of an ear with a small black tattoo behind it. The design shows two musical notes, one above the other, beside a heart outlined with a treble clef and a bass clef. The thin, even linework is set against smooth skin with soft natural lighting.

For three evenings you worked in the schoolroom with the windows open to the wind. Fifty-two strings and a hammer the size of a teaspoon. The island's old dance tunes drifted in through the gaps in the glass, played badly by men who had never learned to read a note, and you caught yourself humming the bass line of a reel you had not heard since you were nine. That night, on the back of the invoice, you sketched a treble clef, looped and sloppy, then a bass clef beside it, and pressed them together into a heart because it was late and you were tired of being sensible.
On the Friday the piano sang a clean A for the first time in forty years. Nobody clapped. Mrs Kinnaird nodded and put the kettle on, and you stood there with the fork still ringing against your palm, listening to the whole room agree with it.
When the boat took you back, the invoice stayed in your coat pocket, folded into a square with the heart split along the crease. Every time you reached for the fork in your bag, your fingers found the paper first.
