Ebba had the cold hands of a woman who milked before light, so when the fiddle came down from the loft she could not get her fingers to find the strings. The frost had got into the wood. Her father swore it was the damp and not the dead man's bow, but nobody on Harrow Fell Farm believed him.

The fiddle had belonged to a drover named Tobias Crane, who had walked his cattle over the tops one November and never walked down again. He left the instrument in the barn with a single sheet of music pinned inside the case, the notes written in a hand so curled it looked like ivy. Nobody could read the mark at the front, a loop with a tail that wound round and round like a sleeping dog. The schoolmaster called it a treble clef and said it meant the high notes lived under its curl.

Ebba took the sheet to the kitchen fire and played it through, slow and wrong, until the snow stopped against the shutters. Each time she reached the loop the tune went quiet, as if somebody in the next room had stopped to listen. On the ninth night she heard a second voice join her from the corner by the peat basket, thin and high, exactly one octave above.

She played it until the strings were slick on her fingers, and the voice stayed with her until the thaw. In spring the ploughmen found Tobias's coat folded on the stile with the sheet tucked inside it, the swirling mark now copied across the margin in fresh ink, and beneath it, in Ebba's own careful hand, the words: keep time.
