Tree line and diamond tattoo design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A pen-and-ink drawing of a tattoo design on white paper. A cluster of tall trees with hatched trunks and leafy crowns rises from nested chevron lines that form a V shape, ending in a small solid diamond below. The linework is fine and uniform in black ink, with shading built from hatching on the trunks and foliage.

The sightline runs true from the old benchmark at Coed Llwyd to the ridge, and I have walked it four times now with the theodolite on my shoulder, cursing the bracken. Mr Pryce wants the Douglas firs down before the frost. The ledger says seven hundred and twelve of them stand between the track and the quarry lip. I counted six hundred and ninety-nine this morning, so either the ledger is wrong or the other thirteen have wandered off.

Eli came up the rise at noon with a flask and a grudge. He had been a draughtsman in Shrewsbury before the mill closed, and he still drew everything twice, once on paper and once in his head. He pointed at the trunks where the light split them. "Look how they stand," he said. "Like nested chevrons somebody forgot to close." I told him the Ordnance men would not agree, and he laughed, then drew the shape in the dust with his boot: two lines folding into a V, and at the point a small square he insisted was a diamond.
We found the marker that afternoon under a mat of needles, a diamond of slate bedded point-down at the base of the V, exactly as he had drawn it. Nobody had recorded it. Mr Pryce's map shows nothing at that spot but a dotted line and the word drain. I sat with my back against the nearest trunk while the sun slid behind the quarry, and I understood that someone had walked this ground with a pen and a plan long before anyone thought of cutting these trees.
I have not written to Mr Pryce about the slate. The firs come down on Monday regardless. But I have left the diamond where it lies, and I have drawn the V on the back of the ledger so whoever holds the pen next will know where to stand.
