Tree and mountain landscape in a diamond frame
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A tall, leafy tree stands on the left of a hatched mountain range enclosed in a diamond-shaped border, with grass tufts at the base. The drawing uses fine stippling for the foliage and layered hatching and contour lines for the peaks and ridges. It is rendered entirely in black ink on white paper, with a black fineliner pen placed in the bottom of the frame.

Dear Joe,

The ash by the chapel wall has come into leaf the way it did the spring you left, all at once and in a hurry, as if it had been holding its breath under the frost. Mrs Pryce says it is the only thing in Tredegar Row that never asks for coal. I have been sitting under it with the mending, watching the tip heaps turn from grey to a sort of blue, and the far ridge behind them going in and out of cloud like a man deciding whether to speak.
The men on the early shift come up the lane with their lamps still lit, though it is broad day. Dai Morgan's boy brought me a fistful of ferns from the cutting. He said you would know the name of them. I did not. I told him that is what a good husband is for, knowing the names of things, and he laughed and ran off down the road with his cap in his hand.
I have marked the wall beside the tree with a pencil line for every week you have been gone. There are eleven now. The ash has grown past the top of the chapel gutter, which Mr Evans says cannot be right, but I measured it with a length of string and it is.
Come home when the seam is done. Bring nothing but your own dirty boots, and I will carry the kettle out under the tree.
Your loving wife, Ada
