Tree, script glyph and star motif flash

Black and grey · Flash

Three separate black designs are stacked vertically on a plain white background. The top shows a branching, leafless tree with small star shapes above it, drawn with tapered strokes. The middle is an angular, calligraphic glyph with a small dot cluster beside it, and the bottom is a symmetrical star-like pendant motif with interlaced curves. The image is monochrome with no skin visible.

You climb the stairs at the Skerrick light before the gulls wake, and the lamp room smells of paraffin and cold brass. A crack runs down one panel of the lens. Tam Corrie, the relief keeper you replaced, has pinned a note beneath the clock: 'Log everything, or the Board will not believe a word of it.' You open the book at his last entry and find a line in his square hand, a sign like a stalk with a hooked tail, three dots set beside it.

The Board's inspector, Miss Isobel Rendal, came out on Tuesday's boat with a satchel of forms and no patience. She said the mark was a tally of hulls. Tam had told her it was a name. You have kept four winters of night watches on rocks like this one, and you think it is neither, so you carry the book out to the gallery, where the wind has the sea in its teeth.

Beyond the skerries, a light answers. It is low and steady and not the lantern of any boat you know. You time the flashes against the watch-clock: seven, a pause, then seven again. Tam's entry says he saw the same thing the night before he was carried ashore with his lungs full of brine, and never came back to the rock. You turn to the window as the mist tears open, and a single star hangs over the water. Below it, on the bare crag where nothing has grown in your time, a pale tree has risen, its branches thin as frost.

You write the time and the bearing in the log, then the words light answered. In the margin where Tam signed his name, you draw the star with the stub of pencil. You do not turn the lamp down.
