The clay had begun to skin over when the magistrate's boy came running up from the granary steps, and before he opened his mouth you knew the seal was wrong. You had cut it yourself that morning, the way your grandmother taught you to cut anything meant to outlast a man: one long stroke rising like a neck, a hook folding back on itself, a tight coil at the foot where the wrist turns, and a single dot set above the curve like an eye that has seen too much. Every tally in the district carried that sign now.

"Upside down," the boy said, and held out a tablet still warm from the sun. Someone had pressed the stone the wrong way round. The hook hung beneath the stroke like a drowned thing, and the coil had come loose from its root and looked like a hand that had given up. Ten years of barley counts would read as a riddle to anyone who came after. You turned the stone over in your palm and felt its edges, still sharp, and the old scribe's words came back to you: a sign is a promise the hand makes to strangers.
You could have chipped the seal down and recut it true, sent a runner north with apologies. Instead you walked down to the quay at dusk, where the foremen were loading the last boats, and watched one of them press the crooked sign into a fresh batch of sacks without a glance. It had already travelled too far to be yours alone. You wiped the clay from your fingers on the cloth at your belt and let it go. Out on the current a small knot of silt turned slowly on itself, the way water finds its way round a stone, and you watched it until it had gone round the bend.
