Tree tattoo on a wrist
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small tree with a solid, tapering trunk and branches spreading into clusters of simple leaf shapes, all rendered as dark silhouette-style ink. The tree sits centrally on the inside of a wrist, with fine detail in the leaves and a smooth, even fill in the trunk. The photograph is in black and white, with a keyboard and a grey sleeve in the background.

The frost had got into the water trough again, so Dad and I broke the skin of ice with the back of the fork before the kettle was even on. The plates came away grey and ringing. Up on the top field stood the rowan, the one tree on Harrow Lane we had never sold with the land, and in February it looked like exactly what it was: a dark trunk, a few crooked arms, and nothing whatsoever to show for itself.

He walked up without a word, which is how Dad says most things. I followed him through the wet grass with my hands jammed in my coat pockets, and when we reached it he laid his palm flat against the bark, the way you might steady a horse. "Your grandfather planted this the year the milk price went under," he said. "Told me a tree doesn't care what the market does." Then he lifted his chin at a low spur on the east side. At its very tip a bud had split open, pale green and no bigger than a fingernail, the only colour for half a mile.
"Early," Dad said. He sounded pleased, which he rarely does. We stood there a long while with the wind shoving the bare branches about, until I took the penknife from my pocket and cut a strip of red baler twine. I tied it round the spur, loose enough to let it grow, and we walked back down to the kettle without saying anything more about it.
