Tree with roots on a wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black silhouette of a leafy tree sits on the inner wrist, with a trunk that branches into a crown of leaves and long, thin roots spreading across the skin. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the outlines are crisp against the pale skin. The photograph is black and white, with the laptop keyboard and a dark sleeve framing the wrist.

The signal box at Harrow Lane was due for the scrap men the spring the line doubled, but nobody could agree who owned the ash tree growing out of the cutting behind platform two. Mr Pellow from the company wanted it felled for the new drainage. My grandmother said her father had been courting under it in 1911 and that was the end of the discussion, though it was not quite the end, because the roots had already found the culvert.

I was sixteen and worked the level crossing gates, which meant I spent my afternoons watching the rails and the tree in turns. In October the leaves came down in a black rain against the wet sleepers, and I noticed the roots had cracked the brick lip of the drain in a long, branching line, as if someone had drawn it in ink and then thought better of it. Pellow sent a man with a saw. The man looked at the roots, looked at the 4.15 coming round the bend, and sat down on a milk crate to eat his sandwiches.

They never took it down. Pellow retired, the signal box became a café, and the tree kept its crown above the platform roof where commuters could see it through the glass. Some mornings I still stand under it waiting for the train. The roots run beneath the tracks now, and I am fairly sure they reach as far as the town.
