Tree tattoo on inner wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tree design sits on the inner wrist of a raised hand, with bare upper branches above a dense, rounded canopy of leaves. The ink is dark and appears to be a single tone, with simple solid shapes and fine detail in the foliage. The hand fills the centre of a sunlit street scene, with a green-nailed hand, a striped hat and a pushchair softly blurred in the background.

Brother Osric had the planting of the walnut tree in the year the floods took the abbey bell, and he set it on the wrong side of the wall, where the sun comes late. The other brothers said a tree in the shade would never bear. They said it kindly, the way one speaks to a child who has carried home a stone and called it bread.

For seven winters the walnut put out bare branches and nothing else. The novices made jokes about it at supper. Brother Osric said nothing, but each morning before the bell he walked out with a jug from the well and stood under the crooked trunk, and he talked to it about the weather and the price of wax and the crows that had taken the abbot's hat.
In the eighth spring the canopy came all at once, so thick the wall was lost behind it. The brothers went out to look. Osric was already dead, having died in the last hard frost with his palm flat against the bark, and the abbot found the green crown standing over him like a lamp held up in the dark. They say the leaves were rounder than any walnut's, and that none of them fell that year.
Nobody in the valley agrees on why the tree grew so late, though carters still stop at the wall and pour a little water at its roots before they climb the hill. Osric's jug hangs on a nail beside the gate, and nobody has ever moved it.
