Sun and crescent moon on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two arms rest on pale sand with long grass, with the hands raised and fingers spread. The left wrist carries a small solid black sun with a ring and spiky rays, and the right wrist has a black crescent moon with a small five-point star beside it. The ink is black, the lines are crisp, and the warm natural light gives the scene a relaxed, sunny feel.

The day sister always left the kettle full, and the night sister always found it empty. Nobody on Ward Six could say when this started. Sister Ora came on at seven in the morning with the light on her shoulders and went home at seven at night. Sister Lune came on as the sun went down, with a crescent of silver pinned to her cap, and she drank the tea that was left for her and took over the dark.

For eleven years they passed each other on the back stairs at dusk without once speaking, the way two people pass a door that is shut. Ora left notes in the medicine cupboard: the bed by the window needs more pillows, Mr Haddow has stopped asking for his wife. Lune wrote back in pencil on the backs of the charts, small and careful: the drip in bay three runs slow, sit with the girl from Mossgiel Road, she is afraid of the lift. Lune never signed her name, and Ora never asked it.
One January the snow shut the lanes and the buses stopped. Ora was meant to be gone by seven, but at eleven the lights failed and the generator coughed into life under the floor. She found Lune on the landing with a torch held in her teeth, lifting a boy of nine out of a bed that had gone cold. They worked without a word until his breathing settled and the machines found their steady note.
At dawn Ora set two cups on the windowsill, one for each of them, and filled the kettle to the top. Lune came up the stairs with her coat over her arm and stopped when she saw them. Outside, the sky over the car park was going from grey to gold, and in the corridor the night was still lying in the corners. Neither of them left first that morning.
