Treehouse in a bare tree on the side ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style linework tattoo shows a treehouse with a barred window and ladder set in the branches of a bare, twisting tree, with a crescent moon and small stars beside it. The lines are dark and even, with light hatching on the house and trunk, and no colour is used. The tattoo sits centrally on the image, with a hand resting at the top edge and dark fabric framing the sides.

Dear Joan, Ward 7 at three in the morning is quiet in a way that makes you listen for things. The corridor lights drop to half at midnight and the drinks machine on the landing hums as if it knows something. Mr Okafor in bed four has stopped asking for his wife, which is either a good sign or the other kind, and I have decided it is the good kind.

Last night a boy of about eight came up from the children's side with his gran while she waited for her tablets. He had drawn a treehouse on the back of a menu card, with a ladder, a window with bars across it and a crescent moon sitting in the top corner like a lookout. He told me the bars were there because the treehouse was a prison for good ideas. He wanted to know whether a moon could keep watch over a treehouse, and I said yes, if it was patient. He gave me the card and said I could keep it. It is tucked inside the lid of my fob watch now.
Around half four the monitor in bay two started its shrill fuss. It was only a loose lead, but while I stood at the window waiting for the porter, I looked down at the car park. The one old sycamore by the bin store had every branch bare and black against the orange sky, and somebody had once tied a rope swing to its lowest limb. Nobody had ever taken it down. Someone in the night had decided it was still worth keeping.
I can't tell you why I'm writing all this out except that the card made me want to talk to someone who isn't on shift. Come on Sunday and I will show you the drawing. Bring the good biscuits. Love, Pat.
