House with tree and roots on a calf
Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A small house sits at the centre of this tattoo, with a leafy tree growing above it and roots spreading down below. The linework is fine and sketchy, with dense hatching and stippled shading that gives the tree and ground texture. The design is entirely black and grey on a bare lower leg, set against a plain pale wall.

The survey drone had logged Number Fourteen as structurally absent, which Ada took personally. Nothing in the Lower Wharf district was absent, only buried. She found it under nine metres of silt and bramble, its chimney stub poking through the ground like a finger through a glove, and she stood in the mud with her clipboard while the wind worked through the old elders overhead.

Her grandmother had described this house: slate roof, green door that the council painted every spring until the council stopped existing. Ada had come with a sample kit and a pencil, meaning to measure the root mass and go home by dusk. The roots had other ideas. They ran down from the trees, thick as wrists, and wrapped the cellar walls so tightly that when she pressed her palm to the brick it gave back a faint warmth, as if the ground under it was still breathing.
She dug where the roots thinned, expecting rot. Instead her trowel knocked against a tin box, rusted shut. Inside was a deed, a child's drawing of this exact house with a tree growing out of its roof, and a folded note in her grandmother's cramped hand: Keep the roots. They hold the floor down.
Ada cut nothing. That evening she filed her report with one line changed: structure present, anchored. Then she sat on the garden wall with the tin in her lap and watched the branches move against a sky the colour of pewter, until a light came on behind a window the drone had sworn was not there.
