Old Marrin kept the light on Scarrow Head for thirty-one years, and every winter the sea took a little more of the cliff below it. The crest over the lamp room door had been cut by his grandfather from a slab of black slate: three triangles stacked in a point, with a pair of wings spread out either side like a gull coming in to land. People said the wings were for the boats. Marrin said they were for the keeper, so he would know when to stop climbing.

The autumn the Brennick boy came out in the yawl, the fog was so thick the lamp showed only as a smear. Marrin climbed the stairs, one hundred and twelve of them, turned the wick up, and below him he heard oars knocking against rock. He could not see the boat. When the beam swept round he could see the slate crest above the door, the triangles pointing upward one inside the other, and he remembered his grandfather saying a light is only useful if it is the highest thing for a mile.
He kept the beam turning until his arms ached. Near dawn the fog thinned and the boy was there, sitting in the stern with both hands gripping the thwart, the oars shipped and rattling. Marrin lowered a rope and talked him in, calm and flat as the old man had taught him, counting the swell between each word.
When the boat grounded in the shingle, the boy looked back up at the tower and asked why the wings were carved so ragged at the tips. Marrin said his grandfather had been in a hurry. Then he climbed back up to trim the wick, because a keeper does not get to rest just because the boat came home.
