Compass, heart and feather on upper back
Geometric · Back · Mixed · Photo
A compass-style emblem sits on the upper back, topped by a red and dark arrow and marked with N and S. Inside its ring, a teal heart outlined with an infinity loop is filled with lilac, and a small star shape is set within it. A shaded grey feather with teal and red beads hangs from the base of the compass, framed against bare skin and dark hair.

The compass is already swinging when you pull it from the tin under the cider press, its needle jittering toward the east wall of Pennick's orchard as if something out there has called its name. Nan said it never pointed north in her lifetime, only toward whatever people had buried and forgotten. The grey feather still hangs from its base, tied on with a thread of teal wool, and the two blue beads slide against each other when you tilt it. You take the path between the old Bramleys, where the grass is cut short and the wasps are drunk on windfalls.

The rows run longer than you remember. Every trunk looks the same until you notice the carving: a heart split by a looping line, the same shape stamped on the brass face of the compass, with N and S scratched small beneath it. Someone has painted the heart over with lilac, the paint flaking in the sun. You kneel where the roots bulge and find the spot the needle keeps tapping, and your fingers close on a biscuit tin wrapped in an oilskin that smells of cloves.
Inside is a folded letter in Nan's looping hand, a sprig of dried lavender, and a single red arrowhead cut from tin. The letter says only: walk the south row at dusk, not the north, and let the feather lead. You stand up with the sun already sliding behind the hedge. The compass has stopped moving. Its needle points straight back down the path you came, toward the press, the house, the kitchen where someone is keeping the kettle warm, and somewhere behind you an apple lets go of its branch and drops into the grass.
