Triforce crest with wings on upper back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person with red hair, seen from behind with both arms raised, shows a large black tattoo across the upper back. The design is a crest with a central triangle of three smaller triangles, flanked by bold angular wings and a lower central shape. The ink is solid black with clean edges, set against pale skin and a plain indoor wall.

Dear Wren,

I have the crest finished, though not the way Mum drew it. You'll remember the brass plate she kept on the dresser, the one with three triangles and the wings spread out like a gull coming in to land. The lads at the yard in Whitstable cut the new one from tin for the wedding arch, and I spent all Thursday on the ladder with a tin of black gloss and a brush I'd have thrown out in any sane house. The wings took most of it. Every edge had to be clean or the whole thing looked like a bird that had been sat on.
Dad's old cousin Ros turned up on the Friday with a shoebox. Inside were three small triangles, cut from the original plate before it went to scrap in 1978, and she wanted them set into the centre of the arch, one for each of us. I said that wasn't how it worked. She said she'd been waiting forty years for someone to say that to her, and then she laughed until she had to sit on the step.
So there are three of them now, hung on wire where the bouquet would have gone, and the vicar has been told not to look up. The arch leans a little to the left. Ros says that's the wind and the ghosts both.
You asked whether I'd come down for the vows. I've decided I'll stand at the back with a clean brush in my pocket, in case the wings need touching up before the photographs. Tell Dev the gloss is in the shed if he wants to try the left-hand side himself.
Love, Jo
