Colour tattoo on a back showing a triangle of a blue-tipped pen, a wand, a dagger and a green lightsaber around a grey stone with runic markings, in a realistic style.

Triangle of fantasy and sci-fi objects on a back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo arranges four objects in a triangle: a silver pen with a blue tip on the left, a vertical wand in the centre, a dagger on the right, and a green lightsaber forming the base. A grey, shaded stone engraved with circular markings sits in the middle of the triangle. The objects have black outlines, metallic shading and fine detail, while the stone is rendered in soft greys, and the composition is centred and symmetrical on the skin.

Brother, the chest came back on the ferry with your name still scratched inside its lid, so I know you are alive somewhere and too proud to write. Do not think I have not opened it. Four things lie in the straw: the silver pen that hums when the river is high and has a blue bead on its cap, the ash rod with a cord bound round its grip, the long dagger you took from the Corinthian who owed Father money, and that green-glowing staff the travelling smith swore was made from a fallen star.

The stone is the one I cannot get used to. It is grey as a bread crust and cut with rings, a cross laid through the middle as if a child had drawn it in mud. Mother said a stone like that was a door that wanted a key, and that the four things were the key, one for each corner. I told her she had been listening to the priests again. Yet every time I lift the lid the cross looks deeper, and the pen warms in my palm though no sun reaches the cellar.

So I have made a decision, and you may scold me for it when you come home. I am taking the stone to the water steps at dawn. The boatmen say the current under the old bridge runs straight to the sea, and I would rather it carried the thing somewhere that is not my cellar. I will keep the staff, because it sings when I pass it near the lamp, and I think you would want it kept.

Come home before the river drops. Bring your own key if you have one.
