Tribal band tattoos on a thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The photo shows a seated person from the waist down to the chest, with wide bands of tribal-style pattern tattooed across the outer thigh and a thinner band on the upper thigh. The patterns use bold outlines, chevrons and dotted fills, with the upper band in blue-grey ink and the lower band in a muted purple-red tone. The composition is a tight crop with natural light, and the face is not visible.

The comb was still damp when Losaline carried it down the path to the boat shed, its teeth leaving a faint printed comb-shape on the workbench. Her grandmother had cut it from bamboo the year the reef school closed, and it had never once been used on a straight line. Everything on Motu Kaia bent a little, Mama Fetu liked to say: the tide, the canoes, the women who married across the lagoon and came back with new patterns in their heads.

The commission sat under a tarpaulin, a stencil of chevrons pinned to brown paper. Tavita Hala, who ran the ferry, wanted a band that would look like the waves on the outer reef when the wind turned, with a dotted fill between the ridges so the eye could rest. He had drawn it himself on the back of a tide chart, pencil smudged where his thumb had pressed too hard. Losaline checked the spacing twice against her grandmother's counting string, knotted at every fourth point, and found the line wandered by a single dot near the top.
She had learned that a mistake in this work could not be sanded out. You moved forward and let the error become part of the rhythm. So she left it. When the ferry came in on Friday with its horn going, she stood on the slipway while Tavita turned the stencil over in his hands, looking for the place she had changed.
He did not ask for the dot to be removed. He only asked whether the pattern would hold. "It will hold," she said, and it did, the way the reef holds the swell, by giving a little at every ridge.
