Tribal bands and spirals on a leg
Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large black tribal design covers the outer thigh and down the calf, built from bold solid bands, spirals and pointed hooks. The linework is heavy and solid, with fine stippled fill inside the bands that gives texture. The photograph is taken from the side against a yellow wall, and the ink is the only colour in the frame.

The seam kept turning on us that winter, the way a river turns when it has forgotten where the sea is. Grandad Tom had been a stoker on the Pacific boats before he came down to the pit row, and he said the miners' hands were the only ones he'd known that could read a curve in the dark. He would sit on the back step with a lump of chalk and draw on the flagstones while Mam shelled peas: long bands that folded back on themselves, hooks at the ends like a shepherd's crook gone wrong.

Nobody in the village wanted the pattern on their skin, but the lads copied it onto their pit boots and the lamp-room men scratched it into their tally boards. Dad said it was heathen nonsense. Grandad said it was a map. Every band, he said, was a face of coal with the stone pressed through it, and the spirals were where a man went round and round looking for the way out.
The week the roof came down at number four, I went looking for him at the top of the drift with his chalk tin. Rain had been at the flags all night and the drawings had run into grey gutters. I found him kneeling over the last scroll, tracing it again with one finger, the chalk stub wrapped in a handkerchief.
'It doesn't wash off,' he said, 'if you cut it deep enough.' He held out the stub. I took it and drew a spiral inside the one he had made, the lines tight and even. When we walked back down the row the rain came again and took the outer curve first, and the inner one stayed.
