Tribal blackwork being tattooed on a shoulder
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A gloved hand holds a tattoo machine against skin, adding bold black linework to a tribal design of spirals, scrolls and angular bands. The lines are solid and heavy, with the fresh outlines still raw against the skin, and the shot is taken close up with a soft background. The image is in black ink only, with no colour.

The galley stove ran hot enough to cook on through the night watch, which is why Pell chose it. He sat on the flour sacks with a rag between his teeth while I ran the needle along lines I had copied from my grandfather's drawing, a pencil sketch on the back of an old manifest. A spiral turned in on itself the way a line winds onto a reel, and a band of sharp angles stood for weather. The swell rolled the pans on their hooks like a slow argument.

I had only ever inked the crew's initials and a swallow on Jory's knuckle, and that had gone badly enough that he still calls it his bruise. A tribal piece has no room for a second pass. Each line had to go down once, bold and solid, because a stroke retraced on a moving deck tears the skin into a smear. I kept my elbow braced on the table and breathed the way my grandfather taught me to breathe over a rope splice.
At the fourth scroll the lamp swung and I missed the join by the width of a hair. Pell didn't flinch. He said the sea had never made a straight line in its life, and he would sooner carry a crooked one that was his own.
By dawn the ink sat black and raw under the lamp. Pell pulled his shirt over it and went up the ladder into the grey light. I stayed below scrubbing the needles in a bowl of spirit and watched the water through the porthole turning its own slow spirals against the hull.
