Tribal design on the side of the ribs
Blackwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A bold tribal design with a central stylised figure and flowing, flame-like lines extends diagonally across the side of the torso. The tattoo is rendered as light linework and solid shapes against dark skin, so the design reads as pale lines on a dark ground. The black and white photograph is framed close, with the curve of the ribs and a pale sheet filling the background.

Dear Oda, the carvers finished the spirit-mask for the vessel Teraquin on the last day of the dry moon, and the Regent has ordered it fitted to the prow before the tide turns. You asked in your last letter what the flames are for. Nobody here agrees. The old sailmaker says they are the breath of the drowned, and the harbour children say they are only the wind getting into the wood.

I was given the job of laying in the pale lines. The mask is black ironwood, rubbed with oil until it drinks the lamplight, and the carvers would not let anyone touch the grooves with shell-dust except the oldest of them, a woman called Ysolde Marrin, who has not spoken since her husband's boat went over at Sable Reef. She worked for eleven nights. Every flame curls back toward the eye, as if the spirit is drawing its breath inward to keep warm.
On the twelfth night she put the brush in my hand and walked out to the breakwater. I asked whether the design was finished. She said the mask was finished, but the fire was not, and that keeping it burning would be my work when the dust faded. Then she pointed at the sea and said a ship needs its light in the keel, not in its eyes.
So every morning I retrace the flames with a brush of salt and lime before the gulls are up. The Regent calls it devotion. I call it the most honest thing on the harbour, and I have grown fond of it. Come home before the autumn storms, Oda, and bring the good ink. The mask needs its breath renewed.
