Tribal phoenix on a shoulder
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black phoenix with outstretched wings and sweeping tail feathers covers the shoulder and upper arm. The design uses smooth black linework and solid black tapered shapes, with no colour or grey shading. The tattoo is shown from a side angle against a graffiti-covered wall, with the wearer's face outside the frame.

Dear Tom, the lads on the waltzer have stopped asking where you've gone, which is how I know they've decided you're not coming back. I kept your cash box under the ticket table the way you showed me, though I've had to move it twice since the Ashford stop because Mr Pell wanted the space for his coconut shies.

Mum has the drawing you did on the back of the programme. I took it to Mrs Okafor at the chip van, and she swore she'd seen the same bird pinned up in a tattooist's on the seafront, the one with the paper feathers in the window. Her cousin says the artist there works in black only, no colour at all, because he reckons flame is for fairs and ink should be for keeping. I laughed at that. Then I didn't.
Here is the thing I haven't said. The feathers on your drawing sweep off the page like smoke off a fire that's already gone out, and I stood by the generator for an hour trying to work out how a bird could look like it was still rising from something it had burned. I think you know the answer. I think that's why you went.
Come back before the season ends at Clacton and bring the drawing with you. I've hung the bunting for the Sunday crowd where you liked it, and at six the light still goes orange across the rides. Love, Jess.
