She piped the cake board in one unbroken curl, the nozzle lifting and tapering so the line thinned to a hair at its tail. Then came the leaves. Three of them, sat at the head of the curl like a crown that had slipped sideways. She drew each vein with a single steady stroke and finished the serrated edges with quick little flicks of the wrist, the way her mother had done on the back of delivery notes when there was nothing else to hand. Ansel watched without blinking, flour dusting his eyebrows.

"Bride wanted it plain," he said. "Her mum ordered the leaves."

"Her mum's been cutting wild bay off the churchyard wall since before the bride could walk," Marjorie said. "Plain would be a lie in that family."

When the sun finally cleared the chimney stacks, the cake was set and the scrolls had dried to a glossy black that looked like ink. Marjorie stood back, wiped her hands, and saw the lowest curl had gone on the wrong side of the leaves. She could have scraped it off. Instead she tucked the box under her arm and left it exactly where it was.
