Tribal dragon design in solid black
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black tribal dragon facing right, with a long spiked crest, open jaws and a coiled tail that twists downwards. The linework is made of bold filled shapes and negative white gaps rather than fine lines, with interlaced patterns along the body and tail. The design is shown in flat black on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The showman's wagon had been on the Hereford road three weeks when the dragon began to misbehave. Mrs Oddy, who kept the coconut shy, swore its jaws stood a finger's width open after dark, and the boy who swept the sawdust said its tail had shifted from the left of the board to the right.

Nobody believed them until Tomasz Reed, the painter, climbed the ladder with a pot of lamp black to touch up the flaking crest. Under the paint the wood was bare and pale, scored with knotwork that ran beneath every outline like a river under ice. Each black shape had been cut by someone who counted the white gaps between them. He followed the coil down to where it ended in a curl, and the curl was still wet.
That night Iolo Vane, the fair's old owner, sat with him by the stove and said the dragon had come with the carousel from a village no longer on any map. It had been carved to guard the travelling people from the sea fog, and its one rule was that the tail must never be finished. Whoever closed the last loop would have to leave the road for good. Tomasz looked at the curl, then at his brush, and understood he had been asked to paint the one thing he was not meant to complete.
He left the curl bare. In the morning the fair rolled east without him, and the dragon rode on the front of the lead wagon with its jaws open toward the wind. Iolo said that on quiet nights along the Hereford road you can hear the rasp of a brush in an empty field, steady and patient, working one black loop at a time.
