Her father, Tom, sat at the tiller with his cap pushed back, watching her rather than the channel. He had cut the zigzag into the tiller bar years ago, a pattern his own father had carved into the cabin doors, sharp lines that looked like a river seen from high up. Today he said nothing about the lock ahead, only that the gate at Sallow had been left open by someone careless.
At the lock a dragonfly settled on the wet beam of the gate, wings flat, black and white swirls catching the light. Nell hauled the windlass and the paddles drew water up with a roar. She thought of the spirals her father used to draw on her palm with a wet thumb, each curl, he said, a day the river had forgiven them.
When the gates opened, the insect lifted and went straight over the water, not following the barge but running ahead, as if it knew the way through. Tom laughed for the first time that week and steered after it.
