Tribal eagle head design

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A bold black and white drawing of an eagle head in profile, with a hooked beak, a detailed eye and layered feather marks along the neck and cheek. Thick solid black shapes and sweeping tribal bands curve around the head, forming a strong silhouette. The design is flat with no shading or colour, centred on a plain white background.

The hawk-kite comes down through the cloud deck at dusk, black against the orange of the dust, and you are the only one on Gallow Ring who still walks out to meet it. Nobody else remembers the old carrier manual, the one with the tribal bands painted along the wing housings so a sentry could tell friend from weather. You learned it at nineteen because your aunt Ysolde thought a girl ought to know one useful thing by heart.

The bird lands on the gantry rail with its hooked beak angled north, where the dead relay masts stand like broken teeth. Its single optic glints. Strapped beneath its breast is a canister the size of a fist, and inside, when you thumb the seal, is a scrap of paper folded eleven times, written in a hand you have not seen since the Harrow fleet went silent. Four words: the water has moved north.

You read it twice, then tuck it into the lining of your coat, where Ysolde kept her own letters. Below, the ring's lamps flicker on one by one, ninety-one of them, and you count them the way she taught you, slowly, so nobody notices your lips moving.

In the morning you will climb the north mast and tell the council the drought is over somewhere else. You will not tell them how you know. The bird stays on the rail through the night, beak set toward the masts, feathers raised against the cold, waiting for an answer you have not yet decided to send.
