Eagle head with feather fan design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black and grey drawing of an eagle's head in profile, beak open and eye fixed forward, with fine hatching shaping the feathers of the head. Below the head sits a fan of long, shaded feathers with a circular web-patterned medallion at the top of the fan. The shading is soft and graded, and the design is set on a plain white background with the composition centred and filling the frame.

The men had been talking about the eagle since Easter, over tea in the back of the store, and by May they had decided it was a thief. Ruth Ammery said nothing. She sat on an upturned creel with the net across her knees and kept threading the needle, because the eagle had never once taken anything of hers.

It was a Tuesday when she found it tangled in the old drift line below the north wall, one wing folded wrong and a length of blue monofilament wound round its leg. It did not cry out. It turned its head and fixed her with that yellow eye, beak open, as if it had weighed her and found her wanting. Ruth knelt in the wet weed, talked low the way her grandfather had talked to the seals, and worked the line free a turn at a time.
When the last loop slipped off, the bird stood on the stones, shook out its feathers and did not leave. Ruth sat back on her heels and waited. Her knuckles were bleeding where the nylon had bitten. Then the eagle lifted, low over the water, and a single dark feather came spinning down and caught in the mesh of her net.
She pinned it to the doorframe beside the tide tables that evening. The men came round wanting to borrow a rifle, and she told them the eagle had gone over to Inish Varra and would not be back. It was not quite a lie. She kept the feather in the net, where the knots were just wide enough to hold it, and when the wind came off the sea it rattled softly against the cord like something that had decided to stay.
