Tribal figure with character 陽

Colour · Flash

A stylised tribal-style figure drawn in teal with a rounded head, spiral scrolls, a central diamond shape and a ribbed torso. Small dots sit around the top and sides, and a dark grey Chinese or Japanese character 陽 appears at the lower left. The solid teal linework is bold and flat, with a subtle speckled texture on the pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been cutting the same slab of grey sandstone for nine days, and the sun still has not cleared the ridge of Carrow Fell. The elders say it left because the people forgot its shape. So you work with a bronze point and a hammer of river cobble, shaping a figure with a round head, two spirals curled at the chest like spring ferns, and a diamond at the brow where an eye should be.

Your daughter Wren brings barley bread at dusk and asks why the figure has ribs. You tell her they are the rungs of a ladder the sun climbs down each morning. She does not believe you, and you are not sure you believe it either, but the story is steadier than the cold. You dab ochre dots around the head and shoulders, one for every doorway in the village where a lamp is still lit.

On the tenth morning you finish the last groove. Your knuckles are split and bleeding into the stone dust. You set the slab upright on the eastern wall, facing the fell, and sit down beside it. Nothing happens. Wren eats her crust and watches the frost on the carved diamond. You wait, and a single bead of meltwater gathers there, trembles, and runs down the channel you cut for it.

Then the light comes, not from the sky but low along the stone, striking the diamond so that a bright spark slides across the frozen yard. Someone shouts from the far houses. You stand, stiff and grinning, and understand that the sun never needed a ladder. It only needed a place to stand where it could be seen.
