Tribal flower with triangle bands on hip

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black tribal flower sits at the centre of the image, with its petals formed from solid black shapes and fine swirling linework. Two thick bands with triangular cut-outs extend out to the left and right, framing the motif. The ink is solid black and grey on warm skin, and the photo is taken close up with soft natural light.

Dear Nell,

The lads have strung the pennants again, the red and yellow sawtooth bunting that Dad used to say looked like a row of shark teeth, and every time the wind comes off the Severn it snaps them straight like a whip. We pulled into Gloucester on Tuesday with the dodgems still wet from the last town and the generator coughing. Mrs Abbott at the candyfloss stall says it's the damp, that everything rusts in May.

I found the old stencil case in the back of the caravan while I was hunting for spare fuses. Under Dad's tin of brushes was the template he cut for the flower on the side of the waltzer, the one with the swirling petals and the two bands running out from either side like a tide going out. He never painted it bigger than your palm. I spent an evening on it with a bit of card and the good black enamel, and it came out crooked in the middle, the same place his always did.

I've been wondering whether to tell Mum the fair comes down the coast in August. Maybe you could walk over with her to see the lights. Tell her I'll be on the switch at nine, and that I kept the template.

Love, Tom
