The abbot said the bird could not stay in the scriptorium, but the bird did not know that, and by the third night of the frost it had worked its long beak under the door and was pushing through the rushes towards my inkpots. I put down my quill. Brother Edmund was snoring in the corner with his hood up, and I had no wish to wake him for a creature that had never once asked permission of anyone.

I had been drawing a border of fern curls for the Psalter of St Brannoc, the spirals that unfurl slow as a bracken frond, and the bird stopped at my elbow as if it recognised the pattern. Its feet were mud-grey, its body a dark round shape like a fallen loaf, and when it turned its head it seemed to be counting the curls on my page. I had heard the old shepherds on the far fells say a kiwi carries the whole of the forest on its back, the moss and the root and the spiral of the new fern, all knotted together. I had thought it a fine thing to say and nothing more.
On the fourth night I left the lamp burning and the door open. The bird walked out past the cloister garth and into the dark, and I followed it as far as the lych gate, where it stopped and pressed its beak into the wet earth, twisting its head in a tight curl as though writing its own name. In the morning I found the marks in the mud and copied them into the margin of the Psalter, one spiral after another, and the abbot, when he came to inspect, said nothing at all, only touched the page with one finger and went on his way.
