Back view of both legs covered in black and grey geometric and botanical tattoos, including roses and a feather, on the thighs and calves.

Black and grey leg sleeve with roses and geometry

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A full leg tattoo photographed from behind, covering both legs from the thighs to the ankles. Roses, leaves and a feather or wing design sit at the top of the thighs, while circles, triangles and solid black geometric shapes run down the calves. The fine and bold black linework is combined with grey shading, and the design frames the legs in a symmetrical pattern against a plain urban alley.

Mags had the chart spread across the net loft floor, weighted at the corners with a bait tin, a sinker and two of her late father's brass dividers. The Serena had come in short again, and the skipper wanted the grounds redrawn before the tide turned. She pinned the paper flat and began with a circle, as he always had, the compass point steady on the centre and the pencil swinging round until the line met itself.

Inside the circle she drew the rose, the old compass rose he kept painted on the wheelhouse door, eight points and a ring of leaves cut from the margins. Her hand was not as steady as his. The petals came out lopsided, and she rubbed them with the heel of her palm until they looked like something a man might trust.

Then the triangles. Her father had always said fish were stupid but water was not, and the water off the Dogger ran in shapes you could only see from above: tide races, overfalls, the place where two currents shouldered past each other and left a dark seam on the surface. She inked those solid, the way he inked his net marks, until the page looked like a night sea with no moon in it.

Near dawn the Serena's engine coughed beyond the harbour wall. Mags folded the chart once, then again, and tucked it under her arm with the dividers. Out past the breakwater a scatter of gulls lifted off the water and wheeled over the boat, and she knew before the skipper leaned out of the wheelhouse and called her name that he was grinning. He pointed at the grounds with his whole arm. Fish, he said, more than they'd seen all year.
