Tribal lion face design
Mixed · Flash
A stylised lion face is drawn in a tribal style, with a symmetrical muzzle, closed-mouth whisker pads and a heart-shaped chin. The mane is built from bold black swirls and curling flourishes that frame the face. The areas between the black lines are filled with a speckled red texture, set against a plain white background.

The lamplighter's boy came to the wall of Saltmarket every night at the hour the bells stopped, and every night the lion was waiting on the far side of the gate. Nobody in the city had seen it come or go. It sat with its mane spread like a bramble of black iron, the red speckle in it catching the light the way embers do when the bellows are worked. Its face was calm. Its mouth stayed shut.

His mother had told him that a lion with a closed mouth had made a promise and would keep it, so he should never speak to it first. He brought it bread on the first night, and it did not eat it. He brought a cup of milk on the second, and it looked at the cup and then at him, and he understood that it was asking for something he had not yet thought to bring.
On the seventh night he walked the long way, past the tannery and the chandler's yard, and gathered in his arms every curl of ribbon, every bent spoon and loose button he could find in the gutters, the small bright things the city threw away. He laid them at the gate one by one. The lion's whisker pads twitched. Its heart-shaped chin lifted, and it breathed out slowly, the way a man does when he has been holding a door shut against the wind.
In the morning the lamps along Saltmarket were lit though no one had lit them, and the gate stood open on an empty road. The boy kept the buttons in a tin under his bed. He still does not say whether the lion took them or whether it only wanted to be asked.
