Swirling lion face design
Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing lion's face is drawn with a symmetrical, swirling mane and stylised features, including a heavy nose, narrowed eyes and a whiskered muzzle. The design is built from bold black lines and curling filled shapes that create a dense, ornamental pattern. It is shown in solid black on a plain white background, with the image centred and filling most of the frame.

The brig wanted a lion, and the owner wanted it to look as though it had already decided who owed him money. Tobias Crane had carved eleven figureheads on Saltmarsh Quay and never once been asked for a scowl. He took a block of seasoned oak from the back of the boatshed and spent three nights with the gouges, cutting the mane first, because a mane was where a carver showed his hand.

He carved the curls the way the tide ran past the breakwater, one turning inside the next, each swirl pushing against its neighbour until the whole head seemed to lean into a wind that hadn't arrived yet. The muzzle he kept heavy and square. The whiskers he cut as thin as eel bones. When he fixed the lion to its bracket, the chandler's boy came running to say the thing looked as if it was listening for something out past the harbour mouth.
The brig sailed on the morning ebb with the lion facing forward. Three weeks later a letter came from a port in Portugal, not about cargo but about the figurehead. A mate wrote that every dawn the carved eyes caught the first light and threw it back at the swell, and that the men had stopped swearing at the weather because the lion seemed to be arguing with it. Tobias didn't believe in such things. He read the letter twice, then went down to the wharf and swept his shavings into the water, where the pale curls rode out on the going tide in a long, narrowing spiral.
