Tribal lotus with swirling stem
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black lotus flower with layered, pointed petals sits at the top of the design, with a dotted centre. Below it, a stem with tapering tribal-style flourishes curls into spirals at the base. The design uses solid black ink with no shading or colour, set against a plain white background.

The river clerk of Orrin Vale stamped the ledger twice before he would let you through the water gate, because the lotus you carried was not yours to sell. It had been cut from the sunken temple pool, black as tar in the lamplight, its petals stacked in layers like the shingles of a roof. Your uncle had told you the bloom would close at dusk and open again only for the one who had asked for it. Nobody had told you who that was.

You followed the stem down through the reed beds, where the water went the colour of ink and the path turned on itself in tight coils. Each spiral you walked was a year the marsh had taken from someone. Twice you nearly turned back. The third time, a heron stood on a fencepost and watched you with one flat eye, and you understood it was waiting for the flower, not for you.
At the island of the salt queen the petals were already folding. You knelt on her stone step and offered the bloom up with both hands, the way the old songs said. She did not take it. She lifted the dotted centre to the lamp and read it like a letter, then pressed a single seed into your palm and said, "Plant this where you were born, and let the marsh keep the rest."
You walked home with the seed warm in your fist. The lotus stayed behind on the step, opening slowly, its curled stem trailing back into the black water like a question nobody would answer.
