Tribal lower back tattoo with heart

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tribal design sits centrally on the lower back, with sweeping spiked linework radiating outwards from a heart-shaped focal point. The shading uses soft grey tones within the bold black outlines, and the design is framed by the curve of the back and a red strap running across the upper part of the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The old gardener at Thornwick Hall had a rule about the ironwork: nothing was pruned from the east wall until the frost had been on it three mornings. Mara Quill ignored the rule the spring she turned fourteen, because the brambles had reached the sundial and the tradesmen from the council would not come until June. She took her grandfather's shears and went at the thorns with her sleeves rolled to the elbow.

Beneath the nettles she found a bronze plate set into the brickwork, black with age, cut in a pattern of spiked curves that seemed to grow out of a single heart at the centre. The thorns had been wound around it on purpose, like a hand closed over a coin. When she scraped the moss away with her thumbnail, the heart opened a hairline seam and a cold draught smelled of cut lavender.

She did not tell anyone what was behind the plate. She only went back each evening with a flask of tea and a stub of chalk, and drew the spiked lines on the flagstones until the pattern matched, one curve at a time. On the last night the rain stopped and the whole garden went quiet, and the wall let out a long breath, and every bramble on the east side lay down flat, the way a dog settles at its owner's feet.
