Black linework dreamcatcher tattoo with hanging feathers, teal accents on the feather tips, across the outer thigh.

Dreamcatcher and feathers on a thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a circular hoop, a radiating web and a small second dreamcatcher below it, with several feathers hanging from the lower section. The linework is black and fairly bold, with light shading inside the feathers and the web, and only the feather tips carry teal colour. The subject is cropped at the torso and sits centrally on the thigh against a grey top and dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth, the hoop split twice before I got it right, so don't you dare tell your mother I was swearing at willow at seven in the morning. Your gran's sewing box is on the kitchen table where you left it, and the small web under the big one is for the babies you keep promising me, though I won't hold you to that until after the reception.

I dyed the feathers in the copper pot behind the boathouse, the way Ted showed me the winter the harbour froze. Pheasant for the long ones, gull for the soft grey underneath. The tips came out a green that wouldn't behave, so I stopped fighting it and let them be teal, which is the colour the sea went the morning you were born. I have never once managed to say that without my voice going, so I'm saying it on paper where nobody has to watch.

Pin the big one above the bed and hang the small one where the morning light reaches it first. The knots are tied so the good things stay caught and the rest slip through the middle, which is how Ted said his own mother built hers. I never believed him about that, but I've come round to it. Don't let the florist talk you out of the feathers. Brides always want them tidied away.

Write to me after. Tell me whether the pheasant held, and whether your husband laughed at the knots. I'll be on the back step with the flask, the way I always am, watching the lane for the car.
