Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A stylised panther or big cat walks forward with its head facing the viewer, its eyes and whiskers drawn in fine black lines. The body is built from bold, tapering black tribal shapes that flow along the back and legs, leaving large areas of white negative space. The design is shown in solid black ink on a plain white background, with no colour or shading.

The gap in the runner beans was the first thing I noticed, a clean lane through the canes where nothing had bent or snapped. Auntie Vi's walled garden backed onto the old estate woods, and in forty years she had lost cabbages to rabbits and a dozen hens to a fox, but never anything that left so little behind. I knelt by the path and found prints the size of my palm, with no claw marks at all.

She laughed when I told her, then made me sit with her on the bench by the water butt and drink her tea from a flask lid. "It's not after the hens," she said. "It comes along the wall at dusk, looking in. Always stops by the gate where the honeysuckle is thickest." She had seen it once, in 1979, walking past the greenhouse with its head turned towards her, as calm as a churchwarden.

That evening I left the gate open and the lamp lit, and I sat on the step with a trowel across my knees like a fool. The light went blue, then grey. Something moved in the honeysuckle, a long dark shape that broke up into shadows and leaves, and then it was simply there on the gravel, walking towards me with its head level and its eyes catching the lamp. It did not hurry. It came close enough that I could smell wet earth off its coat, and it looked at me the way Vi had said, as if it were the one deciding whether I was worth the trouble.

It stepped past me into the kitchen garden and went straight down the bean row, and I heard the canes shift as if a breeze had come up. In the morning the gap was gone. Vi says it has moved on to the Hendersons' orchard, and she has started leaving a saucer of milk by the gate. I still check the beans every dusk, and I still leave the gate open.
