Ornamental mandala tattoo on hand and forearm

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical ornamental design with layered mandala-style bands, scrolls and paisley-like motifs covers the back of the hand and lower forearm. The work uses fine black linework with dense fill and dotted shading, and the image is entirely black and grey. Short horizontal bands of ink run across the fingers, and a dark ring is worn on one finger against a blue shirt.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You leave the market town before the heat, with a bundle of block-printed cloth wrapped in oilskin across your shoulders. The road runs straight east into the flats, and the tar gives out after the second well. Your uncle told you to keep the sun on your left hand and never stop where the telegraph poles lean.

By noon the dust has the colour of weak tea, and a lorry passes without slowing, leaving you coughing. You unwrap the cloth at the edge of the verge to check the stamp: a ring of lotus petals, inside it a band of scrolls, and at the centre a teardrop curling back on itself like a flame that has decided to rest. The printer in the lane cut the block by hand and dotted the fill with a nail, so no two repeats quite match. You count forty-one, then forty-two, and wonder which one you were sent to carry.

Near dusk a wind comes up off the salt pan and the cloth lifts in your hands like a sail. You pin it under a stone and kneel, and in the failing light you see that the pattern you have been fussing over is also the pattern of the ground. The ridges of wind-scoured sand make the same rings and the same small hooks. Someone has been walking this road for far longer than the poles.

You fold the cloth back in on itself so the stamped side stays clean, and you walk on into the cooling dark. At the next town the buyer unrolls it on a trestle, runs a thumb along one scroll, and says nothing for so long that you begin to worry. Then he laughs and asks what you saw out there. You tell him the truth: the desert had been printing its own border all afternoon, and you had only been carrying the copy.
