Tribal phoenix on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A phoenix with outstretched wings and a long trailing tail is tattooed on the inner forearm. Bold black solid shapes and linework form the design, with red accents along the wing edges and tail. The background includes woven leather and a wooden cabinet, and the tattoo is centred in the frame.

You are sixteen and sweeping sawdust from the ring when the strongman's boy comes running to say the fire-eater has gone missing. Old Teodor, who breathed flame for thirty summers, has left his wooden cabinet unlocked, and the bundle he keeps wrapped in oilcloth is lying open on the trunk.

Inside is a phoenix cut from ash-grey board and blackened with soot, its wings hooked like tribal blades, red paint bleeding along the feather edges where he once touched them with a hot iron. Teodor never let anyone hold it. You lift it anyway. It is lighter than it looks, and warm, as though someone has only just set it down.
Outside, the rides creak in the dark. You follow a trail of wet footprints past the generator to the edge of the common, where Teodor stands with his arms spread and his face turned up to the sky, the way he stands before the fire. He tells you he is not leaving. He is only waiting for the tail to catch.
The red at the tail flickers, and you understand the wooden thing was never meant to burn, only to remember the burning. Teodor takes it back, tucks it under his coat, and walks to the caravans without a word. In the morning you sweep the ring again and find a single scorched feather lying in the sawdust.
