Tribal phoenix on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black phoenix with outstretched wings and a diamond-shaped motif at its centre covers the upper arm of a man in a white top. The design uses heavy solid black linework with sharp tapering points on the feathers and wing tips. The image is a close crop with a warm, plain background, and the tattoo is the clear focus.

Dear Tomas,

The ferry was late again, so I walked the harbour wall with the wind shoving at my back and counted the gulls on the bollards the way you taught me. Forty-one. Mrs Ashby's ginger cat was on the net loft roof, watching them with the patience of a magistrate.
Your letter came on Thursday, smelling of diesel and something sweeter, like oranges left too long in a crate. You say the Ardent's engine is finally quiet and you have a berth on a boat bound for Lisbon. I read the middle part twice. You described the drawing Mr Pell made for you on the back of a bill of lading before you sailed: wings swept up sharp as blades, a bird made of tar and ink, and a diamond sitting in its breast where a heart should be. He told you that bird never burns twice in the same place. I thought it was only a thing old men say over pints.
Last night I held your copy up to the harbour light. Through the diamond, the lamp on the breakwater shrank to one small bright coin, steady on the water. Then I saw the Ardent's riding light come round the point, exactly where it should be. Come home when you can. Bring the bird. Tell me which feathers caught the worst.
Love, Ruth
