Tribal skull design in glowing teal
Colour · Flash
A skull drawn in a tribal style, with swirling, flame-like linework cut into the bone shapes. The design glows bright teal against a solid black background, with the eye sockets, nasal cavity and teeth shown as black negative space. The composition is centred and filled edge to edge by the skull.

Sit yourself down on that creel and mind the bucket, because this is a story about the night the sea wore a face. Your grandfather swore it happened off the Dogger in the autumn the Mary Coyle went down. Eleven boats out of Whitby, hauling for haddock in a flat calm, and the water so dead grey a man could not tell sky from sea.

Then at the turn of the tide Tom Hebden's boy began shouting from the bow. The water under the hull had gone teal, bright as a lamp, and every oar came up trailing green fire. Little living things in the water, my grandfather said, that light up when they are knocked about. But old Ezra Stott, who had buried two brothers to the sea, leaned over the rail and said the light was too tidy for that. It was cutting itself into shapes, swirls and tongues of flame, with a black hollow in the middle where the dark sat like a hole in a biscuit, and a grin of teeth along the bottom.
Nobody spoke. The boats drifted together until we could hear each other breathing. Ezra pulled up the net he had been saving for the morning, and there was nothing in it but a skull the size of a cooking pot, scrubbed white, with the swirls worn into the bone like grain in driftwood. The glow went out the moment it came over the side, and the whole fleet let out a breath it had been holding since dusk.
Ezra put it back over the side himself. He said the sea keeps its own drawings, and you only get to look at them once if you are lucky. So mind the bucket, lad. We hauled home light that year, and the water never burned like that for me again.
