Tribal swirl star on a lower leg
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A five-pointed star filled with interlocking tribal-style swirls and curls, drawn in solid black ink. The linework is bold and even, with the swirls forming a spiral at the centre of the star. The tattoo sits centrally on a plain area of skin, with no background detail.

Nell had been told the star bed was not to be dug, so naturally she dug it on the first warm morning of March. Her grandfather had laid it out with a length of twine and five pegs, and the box hedging inside the points had grown so thick it looked like ink on a page. At its centre, where the twine had been wound round and round a single peg, the soil was hard as a plate.

She dug at the spiral from the outside, the way you would unpick a knot. Three days she worked at it. Beneath the first layer of clay she found a flat tin box, rusted shut, and under that a row of bulbs, white and wrinkled, none of them ever flowered. Her grandfather had planted them the summer before the war and had never told anyone why he had put them in a star.
On the fourth evening the neighbour, old Mrs Ashdown, leaned over the fence with her hands in her apron and watched Nell kneel in the trench. "He said the curls were so the roots would have somewhere to go," she said. "Turning in, not out. Everything ever planted in that garden has gone round to the middle to find the light."
Nell sat back on her heels. She looked at the bulbs, then at the tin, then at the small green shoots she had not noticed coming up along the inside of the spiral. She filled the trench again, carefully, and left the tin where it lay.
