Henna-style flower design on skin

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A brown, henna-style design shows a central flower with layered outlined petals, a dotted centre, and smaller flowers above and below. Curling stems, leaf-like strokes and a trail of dots extend outward from the cluster. The ink is a single brown-black tone with no colour, and the bold outlines are set against a soft, pale, slightly out-of-focus skin surface.

The paste had to rest overnight or it would not stain, and Parveen said so every time a girl tried to hurry it. So on the eve of the wedding the women sat in the courtyard with lemon juice, sugar and the green powder ground fine as flour, while the men argued about the price of goats at the gate and the groom's cousin Tariq stood apart with his arms folded.

When the bride, Zahra, held out her hands, Parveen did not begin with a flower. She drew a line of small dots from the wrist toward the fingers, one dot for each road a person might take away from a house. Then she drew stems that curled back toward the palm, the way vines turn to find a wall. The girls laughed and asked why she had made the road so long. Parveen only said that a road is easier to walk when something is growing beside it.

In the morning she lifted the paste with a wet cloth, and the marks came up the colour of strong tea and then darker, almost black, as they dried. Zahra's flower sat at the centre of her palm with its layered petals and its dot at the heart. Tariq came over to look, because everyone did, and he saw the trail of dots running off the edge of the hand. He went quiet, took the purse of coins from his coat, and set it on the table beside her open palm without a word. Zahra closed her fingers over the stain and the coins together.
