Tribal tattoos on calf and ankle on a beach
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A barefoot person stands on wet sand in blue shorts, with legs cropped from the thigh down. The left calf carries a dense black tribal design with bold solid shapes and curved bands, and the right ankle has a wide black band of patterned geometric motifs. The image uses natural daylight, with a pale sky and sea in the background, and the tattoos are the main focus.

Sit down, sit, the cousins are still arguing over the cake, so you will have to hear an old woman over the noise. My grandmother told this one on the sand the night before her own wedding, and she swore every word was true except the part about the shark.

There was a girl called Tuira who could read the reef like a letter. Each dawn she waded out past the breakers, where the water turns from green to bruised blue, and she cut curved bands of coral from the shallows with a knife of pearl shell, so the tide would know its road home. Dark lines ran around her calf and ankle, thick as the shadow a cloud throws on the lagoon, and the old men said each line was a current she had crossed and returned from.
Then Matahi came over the water from the far atoll to ask for her hand. He was a fine singer and a poor swimmer, and when the channel rose up grey on the morning of the wedding, he would not set foot in the boat. Tuira did not scold him. She knelt on the wet sand and drew, with one finger, the same bold shapes she carved into the reef, and she told him that a path is only a path if someone walks it. He took her hand and walked the shallows beside her, step after step, until the water was at his knees and then at his waist, and he never once looked down.
So when the tide comes in tonight and smooths your footprints, don't weep over them. Go and dance.
