Small geometric triangle and circle on the neck
Geometric · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo sits at the centre of the back of the neck, showing an upward triangle with a smaller filled triangle inside it, above a downward triangle containing a circle crossed by a vertical line. The linework is clean and solid, rendered in black ink with no shading or colour. The subject is shown from behind against a plain pale background, with the hair pinned up and a patterned top visible at the shoulders.

Ruth had been taking bearings from the gallery rail since the relief boat stopped coming in October, and the sums in the log no longer agreed with the sea. She laid the brass pelorus on the sill and squinted at the Mewstone light, then at the church spire behind Porthcarrow, and wrote both numbers in pencil beside the tide.

Her grandfather had drawn the station's sight chart before the war, a small ruled page of triangles, one pointing up at the sky and one pointing down into the rock, with a circle sitting in the lower one where the lens had been. He used to say that any three marks holding their angles would bring a boat home in fog. She had thought it nonsense until the fog came down on the third night and she steered the dory by it, the dark upper triangle lined against the lamp.
On the fifth morning the relief boat came round the point, and the skipper, Dennis Penhale, climbed the ladder grumbling about the swell. He asked how she had kept the light turning without the rota. She showed him the chart and the column of bearings, every one checked against the spire and the mast at Trevose.
He read the margin where her grandfather had written Keep the vertical true in pencil gone silver with age, and he tapped the thin line running through the circle. "Your grandad always said the rock was the only thing out here that never shifted," he said. Ruth folded the page into her coat pocket and wrote the time in the log: quarter past six, clear, wind backing south-west.
