Winged triangle emblem on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black tattoo of a winged emblem with a triangle at its centre, shown on the outer upper arm and shoulder of a person in a dark top. The design uses bold, filled shapes with angular wing feathers and a stylised lower section, with no shading or grey tones. The photograph is cropped to the arm against a plain, pale background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Maggie Thorne had catalogued umbrellas, prams and one stuffed heron in nineteen years at the lost property office on platform four, and she thought she had seen everything the 6.12 could leave behind. Then Mr Abernethy slid a wooden box across the counter and said it had been found under seat fourteen of the Leeds train, wedged behind a radiator.

Inside, wrapped in a bus timetable from 1987, was a brass stamp no bigger than a biscuit. Its face showed a triangle set between two wings, the feathers cut in hard angles, the lower edges trailing like the tail of a kite. Maggie pressed it into the blotter and got a clean black triangle, then a second and a third, each one a little more certain. Someone had been stamping tickets with it, or stamping something else entirely.
She traced the ledger back. Three weeks earlier, a man with a limp and a voice like gravel in a tin had come in asking after a box. He left a card with a single word on it: Eastgate. Eastgate was the signal box at the end of the old branch line, shut since the flood. She took the train out on Sunday with the stamp in her coat pocket.
The signal box still had its levers, cold and greased. On the sill lay a row of freshly inked triangles on a sheet of card, and beside them a note in pencil: Thank you for keeping it safe. Maggie stamped the last sheet herself, watching the wings settle into place, and caught the 4.40 home with ink on her fingers.
