Triquetra knot with swirl detail
Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black Celtic triquetra knot sits inside a circle, with its three interlaced loops forming the central shape. Each loop contains a curling scroll ornament drawn in bold black linework, with soft grey shading in the spaces between the lines. The tattoo is centred on a pale, smooth area of skin, with the surrounding skin fading into soft shadow at the edges.

Dear Tomas,

The last night ferry has stopped running, so I am writing this at the kitchen table in Hallam Street with the window open and the wet smell of the canal coming in. Mum's ring is in the saucer by the kettle. You will say I should have posted it, but I could not find a box small enough to hold what I meant.
The three of us used to walk the Ebb Bridge after the pubs shut, Father's rule being that nobody crossed alone. We would stop at the middle, where the iron loops over itself in three arches that fold into one another, so you could never tell which one began the others. You liked to run your finger along the scrolled ironwork and the little curls at the joins, which Father swore were ferns. Nothing about it was simple, and nothing about it came apart.
Last Tuesday a surveyor came and chalked a number on the third pier. They mean to take the middle arch down in spring. I went out at two in the morning to look, the streetlamps buzzing orange above me, and the curls were still there with rust blooming in them like lichen. I laid my palm flat on the iron and waited for it to go cold. It did not. Come and stand on the middle of it with me before they cut the loops.
Your sister, Ines
