Tribal Pisces symbol on skin
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two bold, curved fish shapes facing away from each other, joined by a central cross-shaped line, in the Pisces zodiac symbol form. The linework is thick, solid black with sharp tapering tails and fins, typical of tribal design. The ink is pure black on lightly toned skin, with the design centred in the frame.

On the third morning she went down to the sluice with a lantern she did not need, because the sky was already grey. Two fish lay tangled in the reeds below the water gate, bent back on themselves, their tails knotted together by a length of old bridle cord that had snagged them both. One had been trying to swim left and the other right, and neither had got anywhere in a month of trying. Hal's knife was in his belt. She gave him a look, and he cut the cord without a word.
They let the fish go into the deep channel where the moat met the river, and watched them turn apart and vanish under the green. Hal coiled the cord and hung it on a nail in the gatehouse wall, where the ruined arch framed the valley like a window with no glass. "Count them now," he said. Dorcas counted eleven, then twelve, and for the first time since the floods the number was right, though she could not have said which of the two was the one that had been missing.
