The typewriter's E stuck again, so Marta tapped it twice and kept going. The Grand Union lay flat and brown under a February sky, and the barge Corvina sat at the lock landing with its stove smoking. She had typed four drafts to her brother Tiago in Leeds and torn three of them from the roller. The fourth was the only one that said anything.

Tiago had not answered since the funeral in Peniche. He had sent money instead, in envelopes with no note, and she had kept the envelopes because they were the only things he had touched in months. Her grandmother's black Olivetti, its case cracked at one corner, had come over in the hold of a coach wrapped in a tablecloth. Marta had learned to type on it at fourteen, copying bakery orders for a man who paid in custard tarts.

A lockkeeper's boy, Dylan, rang his bike bell against the hull and asked if she wanted coal delivered. She said yes without looking up. When his wheels had gone off along the towpath, she wound the paper back to the line, typed the sentence she had been avoiding, and then the three words beneath it, slowly, one letter at a time, so the keys would not jam.

She folded the page into the envelope with the others. Tiago might read it on a bus and not know whether it was an invitation or a reproach. Let him work that out. A narrowboat slid past with its wash slapping the bank, and she laid her palm flat against the cabin wall, warm from the stove, and felt the boat hold steady under her.
