Turbocharger with 'Life needs a boost' on calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded, realistic turbocharger compressor housing fills the upper left of the image, with its intake wheel and vanes showing fine highlights and deep shadows. The phrase 'LIFE NEEDS A BOOST' in serif capitals curves along the lower right edge of the design. The tattoo is entirely in black and grey ink on a fleshy lower leg, against a plain, softly lit background.

Right, sit down and mind the bag of tools, the lift's been dead since Easter and I'm not climbing nine floors on my own breath. You want to hear about the turbo? Course you do. Everyone wants the turbo story.

Nineteen eighty-two, Gerald Pike had a Capri he'd bought off a man in Dagenham for forty quid and a promise. Lovely colour, like a wet plum. Under the bonnet it was asleep. Gerald says to me, Dessie, it needs a boost. Boost, I says, it needs a bath. But he went out and found a compressor housing in a scrapyard in Barking, cold as a church, and we spent three weekends with a file and a bit of hope.

Then the first time he put his foot down on the Eastern Avenue, the thing woke up. You could hear it breathing. A whine like a kettle that's changed its mind. He came back grinning so wide I thought his face would crack.

Gerald's gone now. The Capri went to scrap in '96. But the wheel, the little fan inside, it's still in my drawer. Go on, hold the window. Hear that? That's the estate, that's the wind coming up through the gap between the blocks, turning the vanes. Same sound. Life needs a boost, son. Not much. Just enough to get you up the stairs.
