Twin black and grey goldfish on the chest
Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
Two goldfish face in opposite directions across the upper chest, one on each side of the collarbone area. The fish are drawn with fine linework and smooth grey shading that gives the scales, fins and eyes depth. The skin is pale and the composition is centred on the chest, with a black top along the bottom edge and a partial colour tattoo visible at the right shoulder.

Nobody wins the black ones on the first go. Dolly Pike knew that better than anyone on the Margate front, and she kept the two fantails with the bulging telescope eyes at the back of her tombola stall, where the lamps didn't reach. Teddy Vance came along on the Whitsun Saturday with his last shilling and a ring in each fist, tossing and missing, tossing and missing, until the fair was nearly shut and the gulls had gone to roost on the pier rail.

"Those two are spoken for," Dolly said, but she'd watched him all afternoon and her mouth had gone soft at the corners. She handed them over in a jam jar with a scoop of pond water, and Teddy carried them along the sea wall as if the jar might tip into the tide. At his mother's kitchen table he set it down, and the fish turned, one to the left and one to the right, so that each stared at the glass where the other should have been.
His mother said they would never settle. Teddy said they were only looking for a way out. He kept them through a wet summer and a cold winter, feeding them crumbs of bread and talking to them the way he talked to the ferry men, and every morning they had rotated back to their opposite corners as though someone had drawn a line down the middle of the bowl.
When the jar finally cracked in March, he walked them down to the harbour wall in a bucket. He tipped them off the edge, and they went into the grey water facing opposite ways. Each turned once, slowly, as if checking over its shoulder for the other, before the tide took them out past the breakwater.
